Surface RT speakers are distorted when I get a notification

I've noticed that when my Surface RT is in standby (cover is closed but powered on) and I get a notification, the notification noise plays but it crackles and pops and sounds distorted. This only happens some of the time. Is anyone else seeing this?

I've updated Windows and there are no other updates/drivers to install.
