When it comes to mobile navigation, Nokia is king. That’s why six of the world’s top automotive brands have signed up to use Nokia’s Location & Commerce business and mapping content in their vehicles or on their navigation systems – the very same mapping content that will be used by all Windows Phone 8 devices.
Nokia completely owns, builds and distributes mapping content – using its NAVTEQ brand – while providing the Nokia Location Platform to partners around the world. It’s because of this that Nokia’s mapping system rivals no other and is the best in class – setting itself as the mapping benchmark.
Among the companies that have chosen to implement our map content are:
BMW
Mercedes
Volkswagen
Hyundai
Garmin
Pioneer
This uptake by major automotive brands will deliver significant navigation experience to driver’s fingertips using automotive grade quality maps. Drivers will be able to access Nokia’s vast POI database, have access to live traffic information and also an array of entertainment options in their car, right from the dashboard. Essentially, turning your car into a command centre.
Bruno Bourguet, Senior Vice President, Sales and Business Development, Nokia Location & Commerce explains:
“We believe that Nokia Location & Commerce is uniquely positioned to provide a superior consumer experience which automotive manufacturers as well as other players in the industry can deliver to their customers, and the announcements we are making this week underscore this,”
Bruno continues:
“Drivers today expect to be told the best way to get from A to B but they also want live traffic information, notifications of nearby places of interest and data that helps them drive better and make journeys a pleasure rather than a chore. Whether it is a daily commute or a long distance drive, we are delivering on our Connected Car vision to bring a full set of capabilities from navigation to safety to entertainment,”
Nokia will be exhibiting at the Mondial de l’Automobile show in Paris at Hall 3, booth #213. The exhibit runs between 29th September and 14th October.

If you remember the Choose Your Own Adventure series of books from when you were younger (like me…I was a big fan), then Blackout should provide some nostalgic entertainment. I saw that Paolo had posted about the app on WMPoweruser, and I had to give it a whirl. Initially I selected the geeky character to play, but as he was still ‘in development’ I went for the ‘promising gymnast’. The story is quite compelling – a virtual page-turner, if you will – but this is one for the avid reader rather than game playing crowd. Purely text-based, but replayability is quite high (going back to where you made a poor decision and taking a different path), even though I’m still navigating my way to my first fail.Tried any of the Camera Extras yet? Share links to the results in the comments or on Twitter for everyone to see! Seen or written any app reviews that you think should be featured here? Drop me a line.

A glimpse inside Nokia’s material world

Nokia's Nicola Ralston explains why materials are such an important part of its design approach
The beautiful look and finish of Nokia’s brand new smartphones, the Nokia Lumia 920 and the Lumia 820, have caught the attention of many people.
Erik Kain, of Forbes.com, wrote of the Lumia 920:
“I love the colourful, rounded look. I love the fact that it looks so distinct and different from the rest of the smartphone pack. I love that I can get one that’s yellow.”
Meanwhile, Joe Belfiore, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 visionary, told Conversations that Nokia’s new smartphones were ‘gorgeous and awesome’ and declared the Lumia 920 a ‘work of art.’
Design heritage
Nokia’s designers are no strangers to such compliments. The company has a rich heritage and great expertise when it comes to material design, science and technology.
Key to this continuing success is Nokia’s team in all the main Nokia Design Studios in London, Espoo, Calabasas and Beijing.
They are the people responsible for what your Nokia is made out of, how it feels in your hand, as well as what colour it is.
In fact, Nicola Ralston, who is head of Colour and Material Technology Design at Nokia, says that materials are a very important part of Nokia’s design approach to product making.
“I hope that is why the products you see on the market today are much more complete and seamless than ever before because the materials and colours are not applied after the packages have been defined.”
This focus on materials – how they are produced, how to achieve the exact intensity of colour required, how the material performs, how it can be moulded and much more besides – is absolutely central to Nokia, says Nicola.
Polycarbonate
The release of the Nokia N9 in 2011 saw the debut of polycarbonate, a new premium plastic pioneered by Nokia and which is also used in the Lumia smartphones, including the new Nokia Lumia 920 and 820.
Polycarbonate was developed as a result of huge project over several years examining different types of plastic ingredients.
“What we were looking for was a material that could define a new character for Nokia and would allow us to make a great visual impact and project confidence at the same time as build on our heritage of durability and extreme product making,” says Nicola.
“We chose polycarbonate because of the colour approach we wanted to take – the ingredients that make up polycarbonate allow us to get the best intensity of colour.”
As well as being able to achieve vibrant colours with polycarbonate, the material is also durable, as well as flexible in how the designers can play with the finishes – matt or gloss – and still exude a Nokia character.
When I first got my Nokia Lumia 800, I told all my friends about how natural it feels in my hand. Again, this is largely down to the polycarbonate.
“The polycarbonate gives us a human touch – that is the best way to describe it,” says Nicola.
Ceramic and metallic
Another hi-tech material, and one that is making its first ever appearance within the range on the Nokia Lumia 920 is the ceramic zirconium camera detailing and side keys. This material is both scratch and wear resistance, which further drives Nokia focus on durability and strength.
This ceramic replaces the aluminium camera detailing and side keys in the Nokia Lumia 900. Nicola says metal remains an important material to Nokia, but this new ceramic ‘is a little bit different, a little more refined… and just works really well.’
Overall, on the wider issue of metal versus polycarbonate, Nicola concludes that:
“What we want to achieve with the Lumia range is absolute top performance. The colour ability with polycarbonate is giving us all that character but at the same time it enables the highest performance relative to the antenna, NFC enablement, wireless charging and so on.”
Screen
With those ceramic details and the polycarbonate monobody, that just leaves the screen.
Fans of the 2.5D curved glass on the Nokia Lumia 800 were thrilled to find out that it’s back on the Lumia 920. Nicola’s team had to work out how to scale up the curved glass for the larger screen size of the new flagship Lumia.
They also looked at how the glass transitions seamlessly into the body and how black the screen is. Not to mention the integration of the Nokia logo and the Microsoft keys.
In short, there is barely a square millimetre on your Nokia device that has not been considered, shaped and influenced by Nicola’s team. Again, it goes back to Nokia’s focus on materials.
Just a little colour… for now
Completely inherent in the materials are the colours. The colours are not applied or painted on afterwards.
For example, the yellow polycarbonate of a Nokia Lumia 920 is yellow all the way through and this starts right at the beginning of the manufacturing process.
Moreover, the colourful Lumia range has become one of Nokia’s defining and most beloved characteristics.
So, colour is a massive topic and we will be exploring this further in the second part of our interview with Nicola. Keep your eyes peeled on Conversations.

7 ways the Snapdragon S4 makes the Nokia Lumia 920 amazing
To contact us Click HERE
More magnificent reasons to get very excited about the world's most innovative smartphone.
Thanks to mind-blowing innovations from chip manufacturers like Qualcomm, we’re taking more pictures, watching higher quality video, and surfing faster than ever on our smartphones. But what does the future hold? With the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 set to hit shelves soon, we’ve taken a look at how the processor that powers them, Qualcomm’s revolutionary Snapdragon S4, will make your smartphone experience even more amazing.
1. Lower Power Consumption
First, let’s talk power consumption. The Snapdragon S4 processor has been transitioned to a 28nm process (from 45nm), which makes it smallest in the industry, yet it still packs in more transistors. This new process also reduces leakage so that the chip consumes very little energy, helping your smartphone battery last all day.
What’s more, it stays cool to the touch. To see how much cooler check out this experiment Qualcomm performed with a Snapdragon S4 and some butter. (Yeah, you heard right!)
2. Better Performance
The S4 also introduces a new CPU and GPU, which work in concert to make the Windows Phone 8 experience lightning fast. Now that Windows Phone 8 supports multi-core processing, the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 can fully take advantage of Snapdragon’s multiple Krait CPU cores.
In other words, even the most sophisticated apps and complex user interfaces will run buttery smooth. Paired with the new Adreno 225 GPU, the new Lumias also promise to bring console quality gaming and even more stunning graphics.
3. Lightning-Fast 4G Connectivity
For most of us, mobile surfing is one of the joys of owning a smartphone. With 4G LTE, you can surf the Web, video conference, or play multiplayer games at up to 10 times the speed of conventional 3G.
Although previous 4G LTE implementions used to come at the expense of battery life, that’s no longer the case with Snapdragon’s integrated LTE multimode modem. By combining the modem and application processor, having Snapdragon in your phone means better battery life no matter what the connection speed is.
4. Higher Definition
One thing that really makes a smartphone special is the quality of its graphics. Within the Snapdragon S4 processor, you’ll find the Adreno 225 GPU. This both improves overall graphics performance and saves power in the process. The proof is in how fast your web browser displays pages, how quickly your navigation app responds, and of course, how amazing your favorite game looks when playing it.
It’s the same graphics component that’ll enable the Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 to not only play the latest DirectX 3D games, but also drive HD content and support 720p displays at 60fps. If you’re a gamer, prepare to be wowed!
5. Better Security
Unfortunately, mobile hacking is becoming increasingly common, and the problem looks set to get worse. Fortunately, the Snapdragon S4 incorporates Qualcomm’s Secure MSM™. This is hardware and software-based security measures that provide features such as encrypted boot, secure code signing service, and Trustzone SEE.
6. Cooler Camera
Thanks to PureView technology and Snapdragon’s Image Signal Processor (ISP), the Nokia Lumia 920 has an incredible camera.
Coupled with the S4’s zippy performance, you can take your video and photo experience to new heights. Get ready to enjoy silky smooth 1080p video capture and overall speed and image quality enhancements, including image stabilization.
7. Faster Location Services
Unlike some smartphones, Nokia Lumias use mapping software that you can rely on. The Snapdragon S4 makes it even more accurate by featuring support for both GPS and GLONASS.
Once you have access to both satellite networks, your phone can determine your location quicker and within a 2 meter radius. What’s more, you’ll get fewer service interruptions.

…a look inside the phone, at the technology behind the imaging, and the user interface. Well worth settling in and giving yourself a few minutes to read this one.Steve Litchfield has posted another of his awesome comparison charts. This time he’s pitched the Nokia 808 PureView against some other leading contenders – the iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy III and the Nokia Lumia 920. I’m not going to spoil who wins the battle, but the areas in which the 808 PureView leads it totally dominates. Finally, a few new pics from the Nokia 808 Pureview that I have seen this week and I have been impressed with.Taken from the awesome set from Sheridan01 taken at Myrafalle as part of the Austrian leg of the trip that Druv, Stephen and Richardtook recently (this time meeting up with Michael):

Newspaper apps on your Nokia Lumia
To contact us Click HERE
A couple of months ago, and nearly 230 years since it was first published in 1785, the venerable British newspaper, The Times, launched an app in the Windows Phone marketplace.
The Internet and the 24-hour news channels heralded the beginning of a challenging era for all newspapers. It must be remembered though that the invention of the radio, and then the TV, were other disruptive technologies that they have had to overcome.
So, the mantra has always been to adapt or die, which brings us back nicely to the Windows Phone app.
The Times, of course, is not the only major newspaper to have an app that you can download for your Nokia Lumia smartphone.
Choosing a newspaper can come down to many factors such as price, personal interests, following favourite writers and your political beliefs. However, we’re just as interested in the features and functionality of the apps.
We have selected the New York Times, The Guardian and the Times of India to see how they compare with the Times of London. Which one is making the most of the Windows Phone interface?
The Times of London
This is a free app, although you will need to pay a subscription to access the content just as you need to do with the Times website as well (from £2 per week, minimum 12 month contracts).
The good news is that if you’re an existing subscriber to the Times online edition, then you can use your existing login and password and it will work on this app. There is also a free 30-day trial available if you’ve just installed the app.
This app is simple and easy to navigate. You swipe through the following sections: top stories, news, business, sport and section list, which is the equivalent to a contents page for the entire newspaper.
Some of the story articles have a photo gallery that you can swipe through, but I couldn’t find much else in terms of multimedia. Neither does it support offline reading, live tiles or any personalisation options.
If you just want to read the newspaper every morning or catch up with your favourite columnists then you might find that this is everything you need. It’s a shame it doesn’t have many standout features, but it is pleasant to use and is a real bonus if you are an existing Times subscriber.
The New York Times
The New York Times app, or NYTimes as it styles itself, is free but to access most of the content and to take advantage of all the features you will need to be a paying subscriber ($15 per month, although there is a promotion of $0.99 for your first 4 weeks).
Without a subscription you will be limited to reading a dozen or so news stories and watching videos.
When it initially opens up, this feels like a much more compact app than its British counterpart, but there really is a wealth of content available (if you’re a subscriber).
The key to finding your way around the app is the Sections screen, where you can scroll down to your areas of interest, such as sports and technology. The best thing is that you can then pin those sections to your start screen as a 2-sided live tile.
With your NYtimes.com ID (free to sign up, as it’s the first step to getting a subscription) you can also save articles for reading later on your Lumia, or even other devices. Offline reading is also supported.
The Times of India
The Times of India does not require a subscription to access its content, and neither does it require a login or ID.
If that wasn’t enough to commend it, there is also a wealth of videos and photo galleries for you to enjoy.
The app is nicely laid out and largely remains faithful to the Windows Phone style interface. It is interactive too because you can add your comments to each article and see what others have got to say as well.
However, there is no support for live tiles and you can’t pin categories or articles to your start screen. If you’re a fan of Test cricket though, then this app is a must.
The Guardian
Britain’s Guardian newspaper has always embraced online journalism and so expectations are high for their Windows Phone app.
Like the Times of India, The Guardian’s app does not require any form of subscription to access their content.
The easiest way of using the app is by gathering the sections of the newspaper that you read the most into the favourites. Each section can also be pinned to your start screen as well. You can even pin or save all the articles by a particular writer.
All your multimedia needs are catered for in the form of videos, galleries and podcasts, and they all live within a section of their own. You can even listen to the podcasts underneath your phone’s lock screen – this is a really great feature.
If you enjoy reading the Guardian, then this app does the job admirably. There’s not much in terms personalisation– unless you count changing the size of the font – but it is colourful, elegant and with just enough functionality to make it an app worth recommending.

As one of the biggest banking institutions in the United States, JP Morgan Chase carries a lot of weight. This is why it’s exciting to see Chase Mobile coming to Windows Phone and the Nokia Lumia line of phones.

Live Road Traffic Launches in 3 New Countries
To contact us Click HERE
Today, Google Maps is expanding its offering of live road traffic in three new cities: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; Kuwait City, Kuwait and Guayaquil, Ecuador. Now, the maps of these locations are much more useful, as drivers can quickly determine the clearest route to their destinations and reduce the amount of time spent in the car. In addition to being able to see current traffic conditions, estimated travel times are also available to ease anxiety and help you plan your trips accordingly.

Explore the great indoors with Google Maps for Android in France
To contact us Click HERE
(Cross posted on Google France Blog)
Every day, millions of people use Google Maps to get where they need to go, including airports, shopping malls and museums. As of last year, people could continue using Google Maps once inside these popular locations, as we began our effort to provide indoor floor plans and directions via Google Maps for Android.
Today, we’re expanding the coverage of this indoor maps feature to include popular French venues, making the maps of France more comprehensive, accurate and usable for both locals and travelers alike. Now, even if you’re visiting one of these large, well-trafficked places for the first time, you can navigate your way around like a pro. And with the accurate My Location feature that works indoors, you can easily figure out if you’re close to the shop you’re looking for, the escalator that will get you to the right gate, or even the nearest ATM or restroom.
We’ve worked with more than 50 French venues, including shopping malls, retailers, airports and museums, to have their indoor floor plans appear on Google Maps for Android. We even partnered with super markets such as Carrefour so that you can look for items like the “dairy” aisle and figure out the fastest way to the milk products to save time when shopping.
Whether you use indoor maps to view the different departments of iconic French retailers like Galeries Lafayette Montparnasse, or simply to find your way to a fresh loaf of bread at the local Carrefour supermarket, Google Maps for Android can help you explore the great indoors. For a list of locations for which indoor maps are available, check out our Help Center article here.
Otherwise, start your indoor adventure here!

Dive into the Great Barrier Reef with the first underwater imagery in Google Maps
To contact us Click HERE
Today we’re adding the very first underwater panoramic images to Google Maps, the next step in our quest to provide people with the most comprehensive, accurate and usable map of the world. With these vibrant and stunning photos you don’t have to be a scuba diver—or even know how to swim—to explore and experience six of the ocean’s most incredible living coral reefs. Now, anyone can become the next virtual Jacques Cousteau and dive with sea turtles, fish and manta rays in Australia, the Philippines and Hawaii.
Get up close and personal with sea turtles at Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef (View Larger Map)
Starting today, you can use Google Maps to find a sea turtle swimming among a school of fish, follow a manta ray and experience the reef at sunset—just as I did on my first dive in the Great Barrier Reef last year. You can also find out much more about this reef via the World Wonders Project, a website that brings modern and ancient world heritage sites online. At Apo Island, a volcanic island and marine reserve in the Philippines, you can see an ancient boulder coral, which may be several hundred years old. And in the middle of the Pacific, in Hawaii, you can join snorkelers in Oahu’s Hanauma Bay and drift over the vast coral reef at Maui's Molokini crater.
We’re partnering with The Catlin Seaview Survey, a major scientific study of the world’s reefs, to make these amazing images available to millions of people through the Street View feature of Google Maps. The Catlin Seaview Survey used a specially designed underwater camera, the SVII, to capture these photos.

Whether you’re a marine biologist, an avid scuba diver or a landlocked landlubber, we encourage you to dive in and explore the ocean with Google Maps. Check out our complete underwater collection, featuring a Google+ underwater Hangout from the Great Barrier Reef. And you can always explore more imagery from around the world by visiting maps.google.com/streetview.

Introducing Imagery of Chile and Croatia on Google Maps
To contact us Click HERE
In the spirit of making Google Maps more comprehensive and accessible to people around the world, today we’re introducing Google Street View imagery of Chile and Croatia. We hope that these images are useful to both locals who want to scope out their own neighborhoods as well as tourists who are planning trips to either of these scenic countries.
You can now can explore the streets of three Chilean cities: Concepción, Santiago and Valparaíso. In Santiago, you can discover the Mercado Central in Santiago and see why this tourist spot was named one of the world's ten best in its class.
Moving west, scope out the steep streets and beautiful views of the Port of Valparaíso from your computer before heading out with your own camera. Or go a few hundred miles south of Santiago to Concepción, where you can “walk” across the extensive bridge over the Bio Bio River.
In Croatia, we’ve mapped many towns and cities; from the bustling city centre of the capital Zagreb, to picturesque coastal towns like Split and Dubrovnik.
Virtual tourists now can explore the old city of Dubrovnik with its impressive Gothic and Renaissance architecture such as the Assumption Cathedral below. Although suffering severe damage during an earthquake in the mid-17th century, many churches, monasteries and palaces are still well preserved and can be seen in Street View.
Another must-see location is St. Mark’s Square, build around the Church of St. Mark, the parish church in the old part of Zagreb. The square is also the place where Croatia’s presidents are inaugurated.
Since launching the Street View feature of Google Maps in 2007, we’ve captured imagery from more than 3,000 cities and 40 countries around the world. Chile and Croatia are just two of the newest locations people can explore in the Street View feature of Google Maps. Visit maps.google.com/streetview to learn more.

Imagery Update: Virtually visit more places in high-resolution
To contact us Click HERE
Our quest to create the most comprehensive and accurate map of the world is ongoing, but we’re happy to take a pause and share some impressive progress that our Google Maps and Earth imagery teams have recently made. We’ve refreshed the high resolution aerial and satellite imagery for many places around the world, and released some new 45 degree imagery as well.
New 45° imagery available for 51 cities:
In addition, 45° imagery is now available in Google Maps for 37 U.S. and 14 international locations. Below are some examples of the beautiful new views from Pisa, Italy and Winnipeg, Canada.
Probably one of the most famous landmarks in the world is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Its construction started back in 1173 and extended over a period of almost 350 years. Due to increasing incline during the last Century, a stabilization effort was performed that took almost two decades to complete. Today the tower is said to be safe from collapsing for at least 200 more years.
Leaning Tower of Pisa - Can you detect the angle?
In the language of the native Cree people, the city’s name of Winnipeg means “muddy waters.” The first European settlements in the area were several fur trading posts started around 1738. Today Winnipeg’s economic and educational significance within Canada is undoubted. Below is an image of The Forks which designates the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.

New high resolution aerial and satellite imagery:
The aerial and satellite imagery in Google Maps and Earth has now been updated for 17 cities and 112 countries/regions. Below are a few highlights from our latest release:
The aerial image below shows the pentagon-shaped Citadel of Lille, in Lille, France. It was built in 1668 and designed by the great military engineer of the time, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban.

The next aerial imagery shown below was taken earlier this month of the Texas State Capitol and adjoining grounds in Austin, Texas. The building is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
