Today I've been taking a little weekend break away from Google Maps and have been playing instead with the Asterank 3d Asteroid Orbit Space Simulation.

The simulation is an amazing WebGL application that shows a view of our solar system with over 580,000 asteroids mapped. It is possible to rotate, zoom and pan the simulation. It is also possible to refine the asteroids shown by most valuable and most accessible (just in case you have plans to get into asteroid mining).

It's time to board the Orient Express as we set out on a journey to discover the most well travelled fictional detective - in the case of THE MISSING FICTIONAL DETECTIVE MAP.

SUSPECT No.1: Agatha Christie

The British crime writer Agatha Christie probably has one of the best claims at having provided the most well travelled fictional detectives. Her output included 66 detective novels and more than 15 short story collections in which she created more than 6 fictional detectives, including Miss Marple and the Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot.

The Agatha Christie website's Christie Map is a Google Map showing the locations used in the crime writer's novels.

It is possible to refine the results shown on the page by individual Agatha Christie detective or by individual novel. For example, the screenshot above shows the locations in Poirot's 'Murder on the Orient Express'.

SUSPECT No.2: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Probably one of the most well known fictional detectives is the legendary Sherlock Holmes. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's creation is famous for his astute logical reasoning and his use of forensic science skills in solving the various mysteries brought his way.

We all know that Sherlock Holmes lived at 221b Baker Street, now, thanks to The Londonist, we can follow all of the great detective's known movements on Google Maps, with The London of Sherlock Holmes.

The Londonist have used Map Channels to plot every London location mentioned in Conan Doyle's famous novels.

SUSPECT No.3: Raymond Chandler

The American writer Raymond Chandler may have only written seven novels but the seemingly endless movie productions of his stories mean that his protagonist Philip Marlowe is well known to all of us.

GPSing Raymond Chandler is a collection of KML files showing the location of Chandler residences and locations used in Chandler's short stories and novels. The KML files can be viewed in Google Earth or you can and paste the links into the search box on Google Maps to view the locations.

SUSPECT No.4: Ian Fleming

James Bond, code name 007, may be a spy and not really a detective but his shadowy role in the British Secret Service has taken him all over the world.

The Guardian's James Bond Film Locations Map is a Google Map of locations used in the James Bond films.

Licensed to Kill, the ultimate James Bond fansite, has also created a Google Map for James Bond. The James Bond Location Map is a map of Bond's many travels and adventures.

SUSPECT No.5: Hergé

Tintin in Brussels is a Google My Map that should prove useful to any Tintin fans visiting Brussels. The map shows the location of the Tintin shop, a Tintin fresco, a Tintin sign and the location of many of Tintin's adventures in the Belgian capital.

How Nokia Asha came of age in 2012

To contact us Click HERE
Although they were first unveiled in October 2011, Nokia’s Asha range of mobile phones truly came of age in 2012.
Throughout the year, new Nokia Asha models were released and they were quick to find a loyal and devoted following, as illustrated in an ambitious, globetrotting video series called ‘Me & My Asha.’As another example of the progress that was made in 2012, global market research companies and analysts such as GfK designated Asha Touch devices as full smartphones. As a new year approaches, we look back on the last 12 months in the Asha family, revisit the new models that were introduced and remind you of some of the stories we published.

Making a splash in Barcelona

The first new Asha models of 2012 were launched in February at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Nokia Asha 302 was a premium QWERTY phone for young professionals who need to communicate for business, and love to stay in touch with family and friends. The Nokia Asha 203, and its dual-SIM variant, the Nokia Asha 202 both featured alphanumeric keypads – and touchscreens! They were also the phones that introduced the EA Games partnershipthat would prove to be another Asha highlight in 2012.Asha 202This is how we reported on the launch of these new Asha mobile phones.

A touch of inspiration

The summer saw the debut of the Asha Touch range, namely theNokia Asha 305, Asha 306 and Asha 311.They were affordable touch screen smartphones with a quick and responsive user interface, cloud-accelerated Internet browser, with easy access to social networks, that were great for mobile gaming and included essential tools such as Nokia Maps. One month after the Asha Touch smartphones were launched, Conversations spoke to Saulo Passos, Nokia’s communications director for mobile phones, about how they were helping to connect the next billion people and get them online to a smarter Internet.

Apps for Asha

Nokia Asha 311I am a proud owner of a Nokia Asha 311 and this is how I looked back on my first week with the device. As with any new gadget, the longer you spend with it, the more rewarding it becomes. As I kept on discovering new apps in the Nokia Store, this was certainly the case with my Asha 311.In the last few months I’ve looked at location tools, Nokia Internet Radio and as well as my personal selection of essential apps, I also rounded up apps in areas as diverse as education, sports, art, travel and photo editing.

Additions to the Touch family

The final quarter of 2012 saw two new members of the Asha Touch family, the Asha 308 and Asha 309.These two smartphones also heralded the introduction of Nokia’s new Xpress Browser, which uses cloud compression technology to make surfing the web faster whilst consuming up to 90 per cent less data. This underlined that being connected and offering a smarter and better value Internet experience lay at the heart of all Asha Touch devices.Asha is one… And one moreIn October Nokia Asha celebrated its first birthday and appropriately enough for  such an event, we looked in detail at Asha’s terrific gaming credentials. However, even then Asha wasn’t over for the year. The final model to be released was the Nokia Asha 205 in late November. With its QWERTY keyboard, striking two-tone colour combinations, SLAM sharing technology and a dedicated Facebook button – the first ever for a Nokia device – it was the most social Asha of the lot.Not a bad way to end the year then. Somehow, I get the feeling that 2013 is going to be just as much fun.

Nikki Barton: My Windows Phone 8 Start screen

To contact us Click HERE
Nikki Barton is VP Smart Devices User Experience Design. In other words, a lot of what people love about using their Nokia Lumias is Nikki’s responsibility.
Needless to say, her Start screen shows a lot of attention to detail. Here’s how she has it arranged, in her own words:Nikki Barton's Start ScreenI’m using a Nokia Lumia 920, which has a big, beautiful high-resolution screen.I use it to plan my work AND home life, and you can see that in the apps I’ve prioritised and put at the top of the screen. I’ve got 19 there without scrolling, and the way I’ve organised them and the colour coding makes it easy to recognise them instantly.First of all I’ve chosen the lovely steel theme, which combined with the white gloss of the industrial design gives a sophistication to the whole experience. I often see people looking at it over my shoulder on the Tube. The Phone tile is at the top of the screen and it’s large as I use it often every day. I can quickly use the history tab within it to recall numbers I use regularly and also the search tab, which gives me quick access to all my contacts and also the company telephone directory.Next I have a set of smaller tiles representing my text messages, home and work emails, then browser and store.Nokia TransportI’ve been using Cinemagraph for taking rather magical moving photos of my daughter: it really brings the pictures alive. The other app I use on an almost daily basis (when I’m not cycling) is Transport. This gives me up-to-the-minute travel and route information that lets me get across London quickly without me having to think too much.My calendar, which is a bigger tile, combines my work and my home calendars together. It really has made a difference to my home life, as my partner and I have managed to get our calendars syncing using family room across multiple devices and platforms for the first time!Next to that is a large Photos tile, with family and friends photographs making my day more pleasant by displaying a selection of them throughout the day. Then at the bottom of the screen I have two small rows of tiles that include; Onenote (which I’m using now to write this), Nokia Music (I use Mix Radio most days in the evening), the Guardian newspaper,LinkedIn and Facebook (which I also access information from through the Me tile above), Radio 4 streaming (I listen to this station in the morning), Ocado (grocery delivery) and LOVEFiLM (where I line up films to watch and rent). If I scroll down the screen I have a lot more, including pinned groups of my work teams – so I can see the faces of people in my teams – useful when you’ve got a large network spread across the world!

The 100 Best Google Maps of the Year

To contact us Click HERE

Around this time of the year I normally look back at the best Google Maps that have been created in the previous twelve months. Each year, as the quality of applications created with the Google Maps API gets more and more impressive, it gets more and more difficult to single out just one or two maps from the hundreds of amazing maps reviewed on Google Maps Mania.

This year I therefore decided to pick the 100 Best Google Maps of the Year. Because 100 screenshots are a lot of images to display on one page I'm splitting this into two parts and (perversely) I'm starting with Part Two picked from the maps reviewed from July to December.

Part One of the 100 Best Google Maps of the Year will come tomorrow!

The game takes the user on a journey around the world using Street View. For example, to find out the cost of two French doves you need to visit the Eiffel Tower on Street View and find and feed two hungry birds before this year's price of two French doves is revealed.

Mom & Pop's Shopping Tips on Google Maps

To contact us Click HERE

Just in time for Christmas The Guardian has released the Local Shopping Map, a Google Map of readers' tips on local shopping.

The map shows tips about the best places to shop that have been submitted by The Guardian's readers using the #LocalShopping on Twitter or Instagram. To submit a tip to the map shoppers just need to turn location on and take a picture & post their tip to Twitter, Instagram or N0tice.

The map uses an interesting marker clustering system with some very smart information windows. When you click on one of the clustered markers the map doesn't zoom into display the individual markers, as is the now usual practice with most marker clustering solutions. Instead it opens an information window listing all the clustered tips.

This doesn't work particularly well when the clustered marker has 90 tips to display but does work well when there are only a few tips clustered together. This is because the listed view in the information window is interactive. If you select an individual tip in an information window the list slides out of view and the individual tip slides into the window. The user can then read the individual tip and scroll through to read other nearby submitted tips.

Google Maps at Night

To contact us Click HERE

Last week NASA released a spectacular 'Black Marble' image of the Earth from space. The image differs from NASA's famous Blue Marble image of the Earth in that it shows the world at night. In this view only the lights of the Earth's cities can be seen.

Earth at Night 2012 overlays the Black Marble image on top of Google Maps. The map is illuminating in more than one way. It helps to show the location of Earth's major urban centres, it is useful to astronomers in showing areas with high levels of light pollution and it also glaringly shows how much more light pollution there is in the northern hemisphere than the south.

One thing missing from the map is the ability to link to specific locations. NASA's Earth Observatory wrote an interesting article on the lights that can be observed in sparsely populated North Dakota (search for Williston, ND on the map). The reason for all those lights is that the area is home to the Bakken shale formation, where oil production is booming.

Sony Mobile overtakes HTC in Android market

Sony Mobile has forged ahead of rival HTC in Q3, taking second place behind Samsung in the UK’s Android smartphone market.

Latest figures show the Xperia manufacturer overtook HTC during the summer, selling 500,000 Android units in the UK to HTC’s 440,000, although both lost market share to Samsung, with its Android sales standing at 3.2 million.

The news comes as Sony intensifies its smartphone drive, with Sony Mobile German sales chief Dennis van Schie revealing last week that Sony will launch a major new flagship model to rival the iPhone and Galaxy S III at CES 2013 in January.

The company is also rumoured to be making the next Nexus smartphone for Google after benchmarking website Nenamark showed an Android 5.0 operating system, known as Key Lime Pie, running on a Sony-made smartphone.

Speaking to Mobile, Pierre Perron (pictured), UK MD of Sony Mobile, declined to discuss its recent sales figures but said: ‘All sources are confirming the same trend – that we are jumping into second place in the UK Android segment. This is what all our customers are telling us, that Sony Mobile is considered a top player in the UK Android space.’

Perron said sales had been driven by UK consumers reacting ‘very positively’ to the launch of the Sony Mobile brand earlier this year, and to the major marketing campaign behind Skyfall, the latest James Bond movie, which featured its Xperia T smartphone which was launched exclusively through O2. Perron said: ‘Skyfall has boosted the visibility of our smartphones and has also been a marvellous marketing tool for the brand.’

He added that Sony’s gaming, music and movie content offering was crucial to driving smartphone sales. ‘More and more of our partners are asking us to work more closely with them. It is no longer about just launching a smartphone and hoping consumers will buy it. It is about the story we are telling, offering the very best content experience. That content is becoming more important.’

Perron confirmed Sony Mobile is considering other operating systems besides Android but added, ‘Android is probably the best fit’ for the manufacturer currently because it offers ‘easy and unified access across the Sony portfolio’. ‘We are discussing other alternatives and we are open to other possibilities providing the platform enables us to build on that tradition,’ he added.

IDC devices analyst Francisco Jeronimo said Sony’s split from Ericsson last year had given operators greater confidence in the brand. He said: ‘Operators are much keener to support what is one of the biggest electronics brands in the world with an entire range of integrated services. Sony Mobile has also done a good job on the hardware, the software and the price points and now has Bond behind it.’

(Cross posted on Google Geo Developer Blog
Today we’re launching an update to the Google Maps Android API, which gives developers the ability to use Google’s comprehensive, accurate and useful maps to build beautiful Android apps. The updated API is easy to use and features vector-based maps that load quickly and enables users to easily navigate 2D and 3D views, and tilt and rotate the map with simple gestures.

With the new version of the Google Maps Android API, developers can utilize Google Maps to its fullest. We’ve incorporated many of the highly-requested features developers want, such as:
  • More dynamic and flexible UI designs for large screen Android devices, such as tablets, using Android Fragments
  • Adding more Google Maps layers in their apps including satellite, hybrid, terrain, traffic and now indoor maps for many major airports and shopping centers
  • The ability to create markers and info windows with less code
Some of our favorite apps already use Google Maps, such as Trulia, Expedia Hotels and FlightTrack. Soon, when you upgrade to the latest version of these apps, you’ll experience the new API and maps as rich as those in Google Maps for Android.

With the latest Google Maps Android API, Trulia Android app users can search for a place to buy or rent in 3D.
To hear from these developers about their apps and migration to the new version of the API, check out the following Google Developers Live video below.

More than 800,000 sites around the world use our mapping APIs to create amazing and useful apps. We hope you enjoy using this new addition to the Google Maps API family and building mapping experiences that were never before possible on a mobile device.

To get started, follow the Google Maps Android API v2 documentation and reach out to the developer community if you have questions on building your app with this API.

Building a better map of Europe

More than a billion people use Google Maps each month to find their way around town and around the world.  To help these people get exactly the information they need, the Google Maps team works constantly to ensure that the geographic data behind our maps is comprehensive and accurate. As part of this ongoing effort, we’ve just released updated maps for 10 countries and regions in Europe: Andorra, Bulgaria, Estonia, Gibraltar, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.

Today’s update is part of a project called Ground Truth that began in 2008. Through this initiative, we acquire high-quality map data from authoritative sources around the world and then apply a mix of advanced algorithms, supplemental data (including satellite, aerial and Street View imagery), and human input to create a map that corresponds as closely as possible to the real-world facts that you’d find if you were to visit that location.

For example, this update adds a new 70-km section of Bulgaria’s Trakiya motorway, which opened recently to drivers but hasn’t been reflected on most maps of the region until now.

But roads and highways alone don’t define the character of a place, and they aren’t always sufficient to help you get around. So Google Maps also integrates information such as walking paths, ferry lines, building outlines, park boundaries, university campuses and more—providing a richer, more comprehensive and more realistic experience for locals, visitors and armchair travelers alike.

Our new map of Spain, for example, not only shows the famous Museo del Prado and Parque del Retiro in Madrid, but also includes additional building models in surrounding neighborhoods, the well-known “Estanque” (or pond) in the center of the park, and detailed walking paths throughout both the park and the nearby Royal Botanical Gardens.

Explore this area on Google Maps

Of course, the world is always changing, and we want Google Maps to change with it. So when you notice something on the map that needs updating, let us know through the simple “Report a problem” tool in the lower right corner of the map. We’ll make the appropriate changes to the map—often within just a few minutes or hours of reviewing and verifying your feedback! This tool launches today in the 10 places where we’ve updated our maps, and is already available in dozens of other countries around the world.

With today’s release, the maps that we’ve built through our Ground Truth initiative are now available in a total of 40 countries worldwide. To see the progress we’ve made to date, take a look at the image below.

We hope today’s launch of more comprehensive and accurate maps of Europe will help you explore amazing places from Barcelona and Budapest to Bratislava and beyond.
